Sara Mearns

Sara Mearns in Ratmansky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, New York City Ballet, Pictures at an Exhibition, October 2014. - Some dances, including the first solo (by Sara Mearns), had a wild, improvisatory, part-stumbling, part-inspired quality. The tailor-made nature of the ballet’s solos reflects one of Mr. Ratmansky’s greatest gifts: dancers are vividly, individually, intimately revealed.

Seven Dancers

Moses Soyer (American, 1899-1974) - Seven Dancers, 1942 (Oil on canvas) - - Soyer’s wife, Ida, was a dancer, and dancers are a recurring subject in his paintings. Soyer studied art in New York, first at Cooper Union and later at the Ferrer Art School, where he studied under the Ashcan painters Robert Henri and George Bellows.

The Inner Studio, Tenth Street

William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916) - The Inner Studio, Tenth Street, c.1881-82 (Oil on canvas. Huntington Library) - - Chase became a fixture in cosmopolitan New York, occupying a lavishly and exotically appointed studio in the celebrated Tenth Street Studio Building. The bold brushwork Chase had learned in Munich always stayed with him, but shortly after arriving in New York, he abandoned the bituminous dark tones that had also characterized his early style.
